HELLO, LIVEJOURNAL. IS ANYONE STILL HERE.

I am going to be sitting in an airport for nearly all of tomorrow morning. I do not think the airport atmosphere will be conducive to working on ongoing writing projects, but I am determined to write 1667 words of SOMETHING... So how about I bring that one comment fic thingummy around again? Give me any combination of universe, character(s), and prompt, and I will see about writing you something! Fanfic and original fic equally fair game.

I suppose I never made an October book post, eh? I do not have the time to ramble at my customary length, so allow me to just sort this weird mishmash into three general categories

The ones I did not like
Elephants on Acid and Other Bizarre Experiments, Alex Boese
Monster, A. Lee Martinez

The ones I liked
Crossfire, Miyuki Miyabe
The Devil You Know, Mike Carey
My Man Jeeves, P.G. Wodehouse
Reliquary, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories, H.P. Lovecraft
Going Postal, Terry Pratchett

This freaking book
Johannes Cabal the Necromancer
, Jonathan L. Howard (reread)

I suppose I'd be prepared to blather a bit about any of them on request, but I've got Arabidopsis to transplant and novels to write, so for now I'm off.

September book post!
All Men of Genius, The Midnight Mayor, Faces Under Water, Shade's Children, RelicCollapse )

I have to decide how I'm gonna prioritize my reading material for next month - I've currently got Crossfire by Miyuki Miyabe and The Devil You Know by Mike Carey from the library, a friend traded me a bunch of Lovecraftian horror for my spare printer cable, and I also intend to re-read Johannes Cabal the Necromancer, because I can (maybe I'll be able to formulate a response other than FOAMY MOUTH GUY.gif this time! Seems unlikely, though). This is probably the best kind of dilemma to have. Fuck, I love books.

Oh, and I did manage to write aaaaaalmost every day in September. All dumb original oneshots, with the exception of one dumb Raffles fic. I'm gonna try to go for 100% completion in October. My Nanowrimo plans are up in the air but inclined toward "hahahaha hell no."

When I rule the world, I'm gonna outlaw Wednesdays. It'll be the first thing I do.

went through Hades with my hat off
I dreamed last night that I was at a party with some of my Internet bros, the co-president of the Writers' Guild, and a seemingly inoffensive guy who was secretly a practitioner of unspeakable eldritch magic. I was determined to expose him in front of everyone and have him driven out, because I didn't want the competition. There ensued some kind of battle of wits wherein I tried to communicate to the others that there was something shady about him without letting on why I knew, only he caught on to me and started trying to trick me into revealing that I too did all kinds of secret evil magic. Things escalated to where we were stealthily laying curses on each other under the table. I woke up as he'd just blown up my cell phone. IT WAS INTENSE?

Basically, I don't think I'm clever or subtle enough to base a story on this premise, buuuut if I can bribe anybody to write CLEVER SUBTLE DARK MAGIC CONTEST OF WILLS AND SNEAKINESS, dude, let me know, I want it.

SO I'M PLAYING SOULSILVER AGAIN AND TODAY HAS BEEN VERY PRODUCTIVE

  • Got a female Combee!
  • Caught Articuno!
  • And five other Pokémon I didn't previously have, BUT MOSTLY ARTICUNO!
  • Got a Leaf Crown for my Crobat! ME AND CONRAD. FIGHTING TOGETHER, WALKING TOGETHER.
  • Scored 326 in the Bug-Catching Contest!
  • OH WAIT I STILL LOST SOMEHOW. FUCK YOU, BUG CATCHER JOSH. SINCE WHEN IS A LEVEL 28 SCYTHER WITH LIKE 80% HP NOT GOOD ENOUGH /froths at the mouth
  • I'm up to my eyeballs in goddamn Everstones this isn't funny

I'm still contemplating what to nickname my Budew, as I have gotten weirdly attached to the guy and would like to put him in my regular team rotation. I habitually deliberate forever about the names of things - ask me how long it took to name my cat - but I will decide by the time he evolves into Roselia, for sure... (I do have one idea but it is AN IMPORTANT NAME AND NOT ONE I WOULD BESTOW LIGHTLY OKAY I'm hoping something less meaningful will occur to me)

1. That Tahno fic I made vague threats about.

2. Doors turns three years old this weekend. How the hell did that happen and why am I no closer to publication than I've ever been, and should I perhaps draw something? Hm.

3. No but actually I've been getting a decent bit of writing done lately. Although it's really making it more obvious to me what all my recurring themes/patterns/misc. writing crutches are. How about those protagonist duos of Super Competent Lady and Dude Who's Just Kinda Flailing? And maybe a thing where the PoV character freaks out and the narration goes into massive crazy unpunctuated run-on sentences but it's okay because stylistic choices d'you see. It's kind of making me want to sit down and make a list of all of them. But that's because the only time I don't want to make lists is when I am asleep.

How is it August? I'm sure I never signed off on that. :T

Anyway, I'm not quite arrogant enough to have convinced myself that the Internet really needs my opinions on Sherlock Holmes or The Island of Dr. Moreau, plus I'm still dealing with the aftereffects of a particularly inconvenient migraine I had yesterday, so I've only got two books to talk about this time. But they do provide ample fuel for ill-humored ranting, so.Collapse )

I did get a decent amount of writing done last month, too, but I'm too lazy to go back and get exact figures.
